Bardo Todel

Bardo Todel is adapted from the Tibetan Buddist scripture ”Bardo Todel” which refers to the state after death at which time the soul leaves the physical body becoming free to pursue enlightenment.

The story begins with a woman who goes to her dead mother’s tomb to clean and sweep the fallen leaves. While visiting the tomb she notices a broken flower pot and is carried away with the memory of her mother into the past. She recalls the time when her mother taught her how to grow plants and flowers as a symbol of life. After the death of her mother, she went though the passage after death which is the state of “Bardo Todel.”

The play has been created sensitively following the scripts. Layer by layer through the passage of death as the physical elements of life (earth, water, fire and air) dissolve away, this freedom or liberation comes slowly through brutal, natural and forceful ways as the emotions and physical boundaries disappear. The mind always finding it difficult to recognize the freedom and not accept the totality of liberation so again and again falls into a further transformation. So the play reveals the long hard journey to reach the path of enlightenment.

Introduction to Shang Orientheatre

Shang Orientheatre was founded by Sun Li Tsuei in 1999 in Yang Ming Shan, Taipei, near the mountain national park. Through all her experiences and understanding of the theatrical trainings Sun Li Tsuei began to create her own style of physical theatre. Including in its design are classical Chinese themes, taught by invited experienced teachers with traditional skills which actors can study and use to transform on stage into a modern form of theatre performance.

All classes have been designed for the purpose of training actors to use their physique in a state of deep relaxation, concentrating on the spine as the central axis which remains in the central position. Thus performers in the group are practitioners of Tai Chi, Chi Gong, and old dance of Ya Yueh (ancient Chinese court dance) as well as Chinese calligraphy, Chinese traditional drumming and the philosophy of Confucius, Taoism and Buddhism also play a part in the groups development.
